J is for Jelly Beans

Today I want to talk to you about jelly beans.

More specifically, Jelly Bellies. Bear with me, this is a serious post. I promise.

I love Jelly Bellies. Especially the pear flavored ones. Those are my favorite. I only get them as a treat once in a while. Do you know how expensive the darn things are? Upwards of $7/lb here. I never get a pound though. My store has smaller bags and I usually only fill them a quarter of the way, sometimes half if I'm having a really bad day.

I have to be having a really bad day before I'll buy them though. The sugar content in those things is really high and I already ingest enough as it is. But there's something about a favorite treat that can make a day better.

As I said, I only get them once in a while. Last time was months ago. I love eating them a few at a time, savoring them and drawing out the enjoyment of the treat as long as I can. Sometimes I binge on them, eating half of what I buy in one sitting. They're so addicting, to me at least, that I can't always help myself.

But with all treats, we must be careful. I know the push is to eat healthier, and some of you are probably horrified. I know I'm overweight and munching down half a small bag of jelly bellies, which usually runs about half a pound if I'm not careful, is not good for me. But neither is denying myself the chance to have a treat.

If we go all the time with eating only the healthy foods and renouncing all of those things we love, we're going to slip and end up binging on those treats we've been denying ourselves. Then we feel guilty and berate ourselves for it.

As long as you limit it, an occasional treat is just fine. It gives us a reward for staying on our chosen path. It grants us a little bit of sweetness/savory/etc – whatever your idea of a treat is – as we plow along in whatever we're trying to do.

This goes for anything in life. If you focus too much on one thing without taking a break, you're going to snap. Take time for yourself. Find a moment or two to just relax. Take a little bit of pleasure. Don't feel guilty. Enjoy it and then go back to what you were doing. It won't hurt and you'll feel better for it.

  1. Annikka, did you know that Jelly Bellies only have 4 calories a bean? I'm sure I must have said that at some point :D when my OCD tendencies are acting up, I tend to talk about their calorie count a bunch. I'm still struggling with the CEO's stance against gay marriage and trans-friendly bathrooms (he's given money in California for things I have problems with). That said, I have Jelly Bellies in the house because a little store in the mall (an indie one) had a close out sale

    1. Yeah, I have some problems with the CEO too. And you're lucky you found the close out sale. I'd love it if I could find the darn things for less than $7 a pound. Even if I hate his politics, I find that boycotting does more damage to the employees rather than the CEO.

    2. true, on boycotting. I'm buying them much less than I would admittedly, but not totally boycotting. I prefer the support purchase anyway, like the Honey Maid grahamfuls I bought

    3. I try to support locally sourced or good causes when I buy food. Sometimes it's hard with how expensive things can be when you do that. But there are times when it's worth it.

  2. Where's the 'like' or 'thumbs up' button on this thing?

    1. I know, right? They need to put one of those on Blogger too. They're putting them everywhere else these days. :D

  3. Never heard of Jellie Bellies, but I love beans. I have to limit the amount I put in front of me or by, because thou eat them all. And they go right to the hips and my belly, and they don't look is good there is they do in my hand.
Very informative post, and I appreciate the information. I read the comments, too. 4 calories – that's not so bad. :-)

    1. 4 calories isn't bad, until you consider I'm eating half a pound of them in one go if I'm not careful. Don't know how many beans that is but the calories pack on quickly. And I'm with you. They don't look as good there as in my hand. :)

  4. A pound is a lot of jelly beans, but seven dollars still seems like too much.

I know I eat more treats than I ought to, but you're right. Sometimes you just really need one.

    1. I see regular jelly beans priced a lot lower so I'm betting it's only because they're Jelly Bellies that they're so high. But some days I just need that little boost. Of course chocolate helps too, but I'm supposed to be steering clear of a lot of that these days.

    2. Well the price is based on the quality of ingredients- which is significantly better than regular jelly beans.

    1. Speaking from personal experience. I've had a few occurrences of breaking because I didn't take breaks. It's a vital life skill people need to develop.

  6. Jelly Bellies are the BEST. I always have to look up the flavor. I admit to eating them until my stomach hurts.

    1. They've got a bunch of the flavors separated into different bulk bins. Makes getting my pear ones much easier.
