Out of the Night is the first book in the Vala's Story series/serial that Joelle is writing. In it, we meet Mearr, a drug addicted 19 year old who's done a lot of things to keep herself alive and free from her parents. Mearr spends most of her time in Night, a coffee shop that doubles as the hangout for a lot of varied people. Mearr's favorite spot is perched at a table in the front window of the coffee shop, a spot the coffee shop owner isn't sorry to see her fill.
Mearr OD's and is rescued by The Queen. The Queen is a male dominant who hopes to help her. He's seen her several times and has grown fond of her, though she has never spoken to him. He hopes by helping her she'll acquiesce to becoming a part of his stable, though what that means Mearr doesn't yet know.
Mearr is taken to the loft for her recovery, and then she is taken to The Queen's mansion, where she is introduced to the rest of the stable. There, with her name changed by her choice to Vala, she takes her first shaky steps into a world of BDSM.
I loved Night. I'm coming into this with no preconceived notions of BDSM. I know very little, and what little I know I've gotten from reading other erotica/erotic romance novels with a mention of BDSM in them. (No, I don't count Fifty Shades of Grey. Never read them, never plan on reading them.) Now, Out of the Night is BDSM light, as she's just being introduced to the world. I understand the series gets more intense as it goes forward.
You can buy it on Amazon here. I enjoyed it, and if you go in for erotic romance with BDSM tendencies, I hope you will too.
